Door to door is my favorite part of campaigning. There is no better place to learn what is on the hearts and minds of your fellow citizens than to stand on a front porch and listen. I did some door to door Saturday and my chief observation is this: there is angst and concern about the future of our country and it transcends ideology and political party. People are concerned. Time after time, the words “children” and “grandchildren” were used. There is a fear that perhaps ours will be the first generation that passes on a country with less opportunity, less hope, and less security. People are engaged and I suspect a pretty clear message will be sent the first chance they have.
My second observation is this – to all my colleagues who prosecute crime or work in law enforcement – do some door to door or something close akin thereto. Despite what we see in our “day” jobs, the vast majority of our co-citizens are honest, hard working, kind and decent people.
My third observation was this: I wish some of the “global warming” folks could have joined me. It was freezing.
