• The United States is at a foreign policy crossroads, teetering on the brink of losing its best friends and abandoning its role as a world leader, Trey Gowdy told Upstate Republican Women today at the group’s meeting in Greenville.

Gowdy, 7th Circuit solicitor, is seeking the Republican nomination for the 4th Congressional District.

As a member of the U.S. House, Gowdy said the 4th District would see “conservatism delivered by a different kind of messenger.”

The Obama administration all but ignored recent statements by British Members of Parliament that the UK no longer needs to be as close to the U.S., while anti-Israel statements and actions by the administration have raised questions about America’s commitment to the Middle East’s only democracy, Gowdy said.

The latter position remains “undecipherable,” Gowdy said.

At home, American culture and values are under attack by the Obama administration and its liberal allies, he said, citing a federal court decision that ruled the National Day of Prayer unconstitutional and another that upheld the words “under God” in the Pledge of Allegiance only on a two-to-one vote.

During a question-and-answer session, Gowdy was asked about global warming.

“Prove it” exists, he said, citing recent reports that some scientists had altered data to make it appear that global warming is a proven fact rather than an agenda-driven theory.

Gowdy’s remarks underscored his efforts to draw distinctions between his conservative values and a 4th District Republican incumbent who is the most liberal member of South Carolina’s U.S. House delegation.
